Finding a good client is hard. Folks recommend the Nvidia Shield Pro. Finding something that plays all the formats and can pass audio through hdmi to a AV receiver. Umcompressed HD audio, HDR/10/DolbyVision. Etc.
If I can just pop a debian machine down, that is great, but a hardware guide would be nice to see.

Rtings says that the LG (B2 at least) TV’s support VRR via several standards: HDMI 2.1 , FreeSync, and GSYNC. I have a console hooked up, but no GPU good enough in a PC.
What does this mean for standard TVs that people us for gaming. LG/Sony/Samsung OLEDs tend to be able to do 4k@120, having native 120hz panels. Maybe this only covers “monitors” getting freesymc certified.
I use heroic now, but whatever works best at the time. Wish something would be better at setting/searching controller configs.
Lutris and Heroic can both add steam shortcuts so you can launch from steam directly.

Jellyfin has a (plugin) opds server for ebooks that use the same accounts as the rest of jellyfin. I use calibre to deal with organization/metadata.
If you have a bunch of plex users, switching to jellyfin might be a bridge too far.

I’m not sure why you are getting downvoted. I’m optimistic for the same reasons and I think you are right about rapid growth being dangerous.
Linux was slow growth, not to mention GNU, but it is so good, and attracted the right kind of contribuitors.
Running these services has a cost and surely over the time it takes to grow, solutions will emerge. It is best to recognize those challenges and address them.
Well I hope so. Occasionally our nerd stuff leaks out into the world and does some real good. Maybe advertising is only needed to keep shareholders never-ending drive for profits. Wikipedia seems to do ok. I really do hope I’m wrong, but I think you are just being too optimistic, maybe it is because I’m old.
People donate time, and some people host servers and pay bills because they can. I don’t think the whole point of federation is amortizing the costs across instances, but it is a perk. Most people want to know what to join, which is why lemmy.world got so big, so fast. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ll bet their donations do not match their costs.
