That’s his birth name, yes. But as an artist, his stage name was Joseph Goebbels

8·4 days agoI know. I just never bothered to learn them, on the account of being scandinavian.
But I picked up somewhere somehow at some point that Munchen is in Bayern.

3·5 days agoRight now I’m using a Fortigate 101E, but eons back I used a simple PC built as cheaply as possible, installed Linux, ip_forward = 1, and iptables.
I am, however, tempted to build something semi-professional based on a banana pi, as I need something custom for work.
I think you’re in the vast majority.
When it comes to the readers expectation, things become a lot more complex. I don’t remember the exact words, but Brandon Sanderson talked about promises to the reader, where it’s OK to do surprising things, but expectations must be carefully managed in that surprises must not feel like betrayal. Poor execution of this is why everyone hates the “…but it was all a dream” trope.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is your self hosted power draw?English
5·7 days agoAround 700W on low load, almost idle. Haven’t had the chance to test it at full load yet.
It sits in my basement, so the waste heat is actually useful this time of year. Even more so when my basement would otherwise be freezing.
I plan on implementing scheduling where the two most power hungry servers are powered down and up as needed. The other two take almost nothing.
Also, the UPS supports a green mode that is a lot more efficient but with a downside of output side dropping out a few ms during switchover. This removes any conversion loss. I haven’t tested whether my hardware can tolerate it yet, so for now I’m living with the conversion loss.
My house is powered by cheap hydroelectric supply, generated in a mountain roughly 5km from my house, so I’m not worried.

What I meant to write here was: I’ve used both linux and freebsd, and nature vs nature holds true, I th8nk. But I am unsure which one is which.

22·7 days agoA separate family of operating systems. It’s a direct decendant of the old UNIX. FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD are the most common distributions.
It shares a lot of the same userspace tools as Linux (the GNUserspace, if you will), so if you’re used to the command line, a lot will seem familiar at a first glance. However, the underlying mechanisms can feel a bit strange at first once you try it out.
I used FreeBSD as my daily driver back in the day, but now I’m also on Mint, mostly because I used linux more at work.
I’ve been meaning to check out BSD these days to see how far it’s come since I last used it 20ish years ago, I just haven’t gotten around to it.
I also remember hearing someone say that there are two things from Berkley that messes with your head: BSD and LSD.

14·9 days ago300k tonnes of diesel isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things.
A coworker of mine from Brazil was visiting another coworker of mine in Sweden. I saw the screenshot of the snap he sent while on the train:
“Yeah, of course this is where you live…”. Pictured was a photo of the train information sign saying “StopName (slutstation)”.I’ll leave it as an exercise for the (non-scandinavian) readers to interpret what “Slutstation” actually means.
Well, its “skill” was built on public domain or via piracy, so its result should be public domain too.
Hell, my interpretation of the “derivative works” clause of GPL stipulates that all llm and genai products should also be gpl.

To add to this, I deal with massive storage clusters, and it is my firm professional opinion that hardware raid necessitates a proper raid controller with cache vault. If you have that, then you’re golden. If not, stick to software raid.
