One suggestion is to look at getting any useful docker container up and running first to get a feel for it, then pivot towards heavier lifts. Self-hosting emails is going to be a headache as others have said, and monero nodes sounds like it could be a technical as well but that’s admittedly an uneducated guess.

You can look at the recent selfh.st poll for the most popular docker containers, see if any strike your interest and start there.

If thinner, lighter and modern-ness are of interest, I’d say a chrultrabook, but they are more finicky re: swapping out parts. If you are looking for TUI-only, then it can be a sufficient option for a fraction of the price of the competition.

I definitely experienced a lot more freezing on my laptop after installing it (it’s a memory hog) so I upped my swap and things are back to normal.

Made the switch as well thanks to the modern key bindings

Prior to switching (upgrading?) to Wayland, Debian KDE crashed under X11 regularly when waking from hibernation and the taskbar would disappear. Restarting the plasma shell made it operable again, so I created an alias and regularly rebooted the DE shell 2-3x a day:

alias damnTaskbar='killall plasmashell ; kstart plasmashell &'

I get it. I’m a year in and was pulling my hair out dealing w/ frustrating issues for the first few weeks/months. Smooth sailing now, but I don’t deny the learning curves that are possible.

If you know how to write scripts in bash, that is an alternative way to trigger night mode/dark themes. You can use curl wttr.in to get your local sunrise/sunset, write a simple IF statement if the time is greater than sunset/sunrise and automate it via cron/systemD.

I run Debian 12 and ran into similar issues trying to automount NFS, even down to having to use an alternative console to log in and undo f stab edits

My solution was simple and so hopefully it helps you as well. In fstab, the backslashes don’t cancel out spaces. Since my directory path had a space in it, that would break fstab:

Path/to/your/Video\ Files breaks fstab

Path/to/your/VideoFiles good

I used to install VS code for every new install and now I just stick to Kate. Although the storage impact is minimal, a lot of the dependencies for KDE apps are already present if you are running KDE as your desktop env.
