Linux@lemmy.ml•Where is Linux not working well in your daily usage? Share your pain points as of 2026, so we can respectfully discuss
1·15 days agoLinux hobbiest for a couple decades, began daily driving a couple months ago. My workflows for graphic design have been extremely stunted without being able to use Illustrator.
I’ve been looking for a reasonable replacement since 2012. Reasonable meaning it can do everything I need it to do and without slowing down productivity. So, this pain point didn’t come as a surprise, it just is.
It’s a tradeoff I made willingly and with full knowledge of the ramifications. I have zero regrets, even if I’m handicapped on certain tasks.
Now that I’m daily driving, I’ve been able to learn much more than when I just had Linux on my gaming box. For instance, I friggin love how expandable Dolphin is. Batch resize and convert images with a couple clicks from a file browser? Hell yeah!
The terminal has also become a closer friend, but I still hate VIM. :p

Technology@lemmy.world•Major Bitcoin mining firm pivoting to AI, plans to fully abandon crypto mining by 2027 as miners convert to AI en masse — Bitfarm to leverage 341 megawatt capacity for AI following $46 million Q3 lossEnglish
11·3 months agoDepending on which crypto, but yes. And the ASICs have a usable shelf life of just a few years, so I assume they are migrating to machines for AI processing as their ASICs need routine replacement.
+1 for Davinci replacing Premier (and its built-in Fairlight replacing Audition, for that matter).
However, it’s kind of weird that they say GIMP is a reasonable alternative to Photoshop, but RawTherapee isn’t for Lightroom.
And there is no mention of Illustrator.
The reason for that is, for those that use Illustrator as a part of their professional workflow, there is no viable alternative. There is software that can do some tasks the same, some tasks differently but at the same speed, some tasks the differently but take longer to achieve, and some tasks not at all. It’s those last two that make switching unviable for folks that use it as one of their primary tools for paying the bills
Again, I know it wasn’t mentioned in the article, I just thought it was strangely left out when just as poor alternatives to Photoshop were cited.
To be clear, I hate adobe. I hate windows (and apple). I’ve been trying to break completely free since 2011. I do revisit the available Linux software alternatives every few years, but never hold my breath. I even donate to projects that show promise. It’s just not there yet. To make a claim that it is, for anyone but hobbyists, is asinine.
So many people are in that same “would if they could” boat. But you can’t simply restructure your entire workflow if the resulting workflow doesn’t work.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Job Fears Hit Peak Hype While Reality Lags BehindEnglish
3·7 months agoI was recently swimming in that thought soup, myself.
In reality, the truth is somewhere in between. Yes, AI is taking real jobs right now, not a speculative future, but so are the economic issues.
There are just so many people suffering. Young and old, there’s not a demographic untouched by it. Plenty of blame to go around, for sure.
…if this works for my use-case I’m going to kiss your feet.
