That’s missing the point. Engineers perform at a specific level. You don’t expect civil engineers to build the bridge. Can they do it? Sure. But that’s not the profession. Same with Structural Engineers, Chemical Engineers, Industrial Engineers, etc. They are at a higher level in the planification and execution process and will likely have signatory responsibilities on the project. If the bridge falls, the engineer does have explaining to do.

The equivalent for a software engineer would be (in the US) more at the level of architect with responsibilities higher than developers.

But engineers is not a protected term so everyone is an engineer now.

Software development is done by developers. If you are a software engineer chances are you’re working on software infrastructure that actually apply at scales that are not “add a shopping cart to this blog”.

Everyone, literally every big studio, tried to launch their universe. Wizard Universe, Hasbro Universe, Jumpstreet Universe, Transformers Universe, Star Wars Universe, do you remember The Mummy and the Dark Universe? Shit Call of Duty was going to get its universe at some point.

Producers saw that a universe can be highly profitable and just said “I want some of that” (add to it that it’s actually fun and people do want some connected content). They didn’t care about quality though. And Disney doesn’t care about quality, it just so happen that Marvel hit that lightning in a bottle.

The shift now for connected storylines is towards series with spinoffs as needed (The Boys, Invincible, LOTR, why can’t I think of a non-Prime example, I guess ASOFAI/). It’s healthier and easier to test ideas. But even there we saw plenty of low quality low success stuff.

Basically markets shifted and producers are trying to find what they can sell, spending billions on sets and CGI but forgetting to get good writers and directors.

I’ve been educating people on this all my professional life. I try to make a change with the people around me, but I’ve also filed big to some FOSS projects that got it wrong. Some did the change, some were unwilling. But it’s unknown if even those did follow the right convention in their next project.
