That’s the policy at most schools. Actually enforcing that in the face of a classroom of kids who don’t respect the rule? That’s a much bigger problem. They’re a lot more clever at sneaking them out than you would think. Moreover, if the phones are just feet from them, their presence is never out of mind. They’re a constant distraction even in a bag. Phone apps are literally designed to be addictive. Imagine if we had a rule that said “crack pipes are fine in your bag. As long as you don’t take them out and smoke in class, you’re fine.” Even if we lived in a world where crack somehow was legal for minors to have, how effective to you think that rule could be enforced?

  • Funny how trans people never have religious rights in these discussions. Or how they refer to “trans ideology” rather than trans religious or philosophical beliefs. If I were to opine on my beliefs of the soul/spirit, I would say I was created with a female spirit in a male body. If I have any religious belief, then it is a religious worldview where such a thing is possible. Yet trans people never seem to have their religious rights acknowledged.

  • My favorite incidents of bungled auto transcription:

First, on a a voicemail, the caller said, “this is _____ over at Rice’s pharmacy.” The transcription read, “this is _____, overt racist pharmacy.”

I mean, I suppose if the pharmacy is racist, at least they’re overt about it so people can avoid the place.

Second, I have some lecture videos on YouTube, and in one course we used a text by Hibbeler. A few times in the video I will say something like, “this is problem so an so from the Hibbeler text.” The captions have me referring to “the Hitler text.”

Apparently I was referencing Mein Kampf while teaching undergraduate mechanics, for some reason.

  • Regardless of how the act was done, it was undeniably an act of extreme sacrifice. He threw his life away to bring justice to an evil man who would never face justice any other way. Assuming he is the killer, Luigi did this even though he himself is from a well-off family and will never have trouble affording healthcare. Brian Thompson killed tens of thousands of innocent human beings. Because of Luigi, Brian Thompson will never kill again.

To give your life in the service of total strangers? To sacrifice yourself to save the innocent and punish the guilty? To become a literal martyr? That is the making of a saint.
