This is how I do it, and for good reason: Reddit aggressively rate limits API calls. I’ve read they’ve limited us to ~100 requests / 10 minutes. That’s fine if you run an instance just for yourself. If you’re hosting a popular public instance, chances are you’ll run into a brick wall pretty quickly.

Recently read a comment here: “Think you have a backup? Delete your drives now. If you’re hesitant, you don’t really have a backup.”
As true as that is: I’d be in the “hesitant” category because I only back up my data / containers, not my bare metal system and its config. Do you guys? (Proxmox users will probably do, but what about the rest?)

4·3 days agoTrue; I skipped this part because the comment I was replying to was about taxpayer money bailouts. What you’re describing is the creation of an artificial moat against competitors. And it is correct that this is also a motive behind pushing for regulation.

13·3 days agoThis is clearly the exit strategy here. That’s why AI companies’ try to label their products as “dangerous” and call for their own regulation. On the one hand, they want to be regarded as a matter of “national security” because they bloody well know that this gives them access to taxpayer money, which in turn can bail them out of their failing bet on data center build-out. On the other hand, it helps them shift liability onto regulators if things go south and allows them to say: “We told you we wanted regulation, but you wouldn’t listen.”

True. But the comment I was replying to was talking about hackers with a kind of “ethos” / ethics.

11·9 days agoI know of these famed Nvidia driver problems, but they’re
a) not exclusive to Ubuntu; Nvidia is the party fucking up here, so they’re rumoured to be unstable throughout all distros and
b) I’ve been running Debian-/Ubuntu-based Linux distros w/ Nvidia’s proprietary drivers for about 10 years now, and I haven’t come across a single issue with it in all that time.So. Well. That’s anecdotal evidence against anecdotal evidence, I guess.
