The social ecosystem around FOSS is so horribly toxic. There’s an “upper middle class” of power user that aren’t quite developers, that insult everyone with less experience, and openly harass the developers themselves. I honestly don’t know how FOSS can expand adoption as long as these people exist. They are a dual-edged sword that disincentivizes both new adoptees and long term app support.

Reddit@lemmy.world•12 year old account permanently banned. First post on lemmy :)English
13·7 days agoFunny I had a 15 year account and was never once banned from anything, ever.
I swear the threadiverse is a remote island made up of 50% idealists and 50% convicts.

4·7 days ago😂 It wasn’t until I was finished typing out my comment that I realized I was doing the classic Lemmy thing of just wholly ignoring OP and ranting about something tangential.
I may not be able to control myself but at least I can acknowledge my poor behavior!

12·8 days agoI can’t help you so I’m going to rant about something not related.
Gramps is great once it’s up and running but it’s so frustrating that you cant add a person and just add a residence or wedding date or birth. Noooo, you need to create the events and locations first and then create the person and link the events to them.
Which is basically the opposite way humans think about lifetimes. I would kill for a feature of “Create new birth/wedding/etc event” from the person page.
stop? 👉👈 🥺 why UwU? me do wrong?

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Question: What are some alternatives to a Raspberry Pi good for a small home server?English
1·12 days agoYeah the best option is the old PC you already have. Unless you’re transcoding video or into LLMs it will be more than enough.

3·15 days agoI’m hoping for more niche instances with their own distinct identities and quirks. The threadiverse could really be the best of the old PhPBB universe and reddit.

3·15 days agoLol my first thought too. You chose the no rules instance and you’re upset you’re seeing trash?
Lemmy.world may have ragebait, but every instance is a different experience.

10·19 days agoI wish more Lemmy communities took action against the 10-12 accounts who spam stale memes all day, but I think they are afraid of appearing too “dead” to outsiders.

7·19 days agoAny platform that
- Allows users to upload content and
- Whose revenue is tied to engagement
Will inevitably become overrun with slop. The large platforms have had human slop on them for years, AI is only speeding it up.
What protects the Fediverse is that instance owners have no financial incentive for growth because every piece of content, every federated instance increases their hosting costs. And any instance that somehow becomes too big to properly moderate will quickly become mass de-federated form.

4·25 days agoYeah this is it. I like snaps just fine but I also like Flatpaks and well, everyone else is using Flatpaks.
Hah! I definitely didn’t mean any shade at Zorin! I used it for a while too. I ultimately moved to Fedora Kinoite and now Bazzite for the exact reasons you described, the immutability makes it even harder to break than Zorin.
It’s great we have so many good options these days.
