Hi !noncredibledefense@sh.itjust.works mod here. I’ve tried to reach out to the reddit team on Lemmy but have had no response. I’m happy to make them mods (pending community approval) if they want a jumpstart. One of the cool things about Lemmy is there can be multiple versions of the same community for fallbacks if the main community is banned or the instance shuts down.

    Anyways welcome reddit people! 🫡

Yeah, that’s just a sign of someone not understanding how lemmy works.

The mods can decide to move, but that’s all that changes. They essentially just have another version on the second instance, with the first one now being “owned” by the administration of the first instance.

“Moving” a community isn’t as simple as just saying to move. If the community of the C/ says “nah, fuck that”, there’s nothing anyone but the owner of the instance can do to make them move. There’s already been cases where mods decide to abandon their first attempt on a given instance, move to another, and all that happens is that there’s a new mod or mods that take over. For good or ill, mods don’t own shit on lemmy. Unless it’s a trademarked name, which is its own thing, but good luck trademarking most C/ names. Even then, you’d still have to enforce that trademark, which is neither cheap or easy.

On lemmy, “There can be only one” IS NOT TRUE. There can be, and often will be multiple communities. This is a good thing, not a flaw. It isn’t even unique to lemmy. I can register southsamurai@ gmail, yahoomail (if I was an idiot), hotmail, aol.com, whatever. This user name? It exists on reddit, and on a dozen other sites unrelated to reddit.

C/s are the same. There can only be one NCD on lemmy.world, but there would still be one on reddit, and could be on sopuli.xyz, on circlejerk.org, or whatever.

That’s the entire point of federation and decentralization. It’s, ultimately, very democratic because we have choices. We can join the same C/ on fifteen different instances, and do so freely. Hell, on most instances, if the mods try to ban users from other instances or that use other versions, they can get removed because that’s against policy in a lot of instances (though not always directly stated).

So, wherever you started out (I don’t remember your home instance, and it might not be the same as the C/ you’re coming from anyway) is ncd X. The one on sh itjust works is ncd Y, and lemmy world is ncd Z. They all exist, and whoever wants to use them, can. So, just subscribe to all of them, and enjoy :)
