Technology@lemmy.world•Cory Doctorow: The people who tell you ‘AI is changing everything’ are lyingEnglish
1084·3 days agoTo the average person (and this includes politicians, basically anyone not a software engineer developing the tools )who Cory generally writes to try and inform, they are the same.
Should they be? No. But that’s a whole different thing and trying to change that in the general public mind doesn’t change his current point about AI as the public thinks of it right now.
You sent me down the exact kind of weird rabbit hole I love. Genuinely thank you.
It’s maintained by the IANA now (the same people who basically run the modern Internet, saying what domains are allowed and such for those who don’t know). Though Arthur David Olson (the man you mentioned) still contributes his expertise and data.

9·8 days agoReally appreciate the Gimli meme usage
I dunno of a site but she’s a very mixed bag on it. It’s one of the few things I personally feel she’s dropped the ball on. She criticizes the genocide, but she calls the left antisemitic, she voted against the bill to stop subsidizing Israel but claims it was because it would only stop subsidizing their iron dome when we need to stop subsidizing their offensive weapon purchases instead (her words, I say fuck em completely). She has publicly rejected Israeli AIPAC campaign money but that money can be funneled through shell PACs and hard to actually track, I’ve seen rumors she’s gotten some but those rumors always feel oddly timed and inconcrete and more an attempt to sway opinion against her than truth.

ADHD memes@lemmy.dbzer0.com•ADHD parents, how do you teach your kids that we can sometimes be a bit overbearing for others?English
6·10 days agoDon’t have a kid yet but currently trying and I’ve been thinking about this lately, especially after seeing my nephews who definitely have ADHD but aren’t being taught how to handle it at all vs my best friend’s kid who also has it but is being guided better so…I dunno. Take it as the thoughts of a guy who knows nothing but has hard core ADHD himself.
My plan is to build on my wife and I’s plans to teach them everyone is different, and that includes how you need to communicate with them. I plan to teach them that people have their own thoughts and wants and needs and being conscious of those is important. I do also plan to teach them that not everyone will like them or want to communicate or be friends with them and that’s okay, so long as it’s just because they’re different and not because you did something to hurt them.
Some people are just not going to accept the energy of an ADHD person, I’m hoping if they know not everyone will like them just because they like different things, that extends to ADHD energy too.
I’m really hoping we raise our kids to be open and honest with us about what they’re thinking and feeling so we can be aware more of their issues specifically.
I also found, personally, getting exposed to different cultures and seeing how they think about things differently and interact differently helped me tackle my own communication issues and realize that some people I thought hated me were actually solid friends and just don’t express much (but they’ve shown up every moving day). Not sure how to translate that into teaching moments for a kid other than teaching them about other cultures and gently pointing out differences in my own friends and how it’s okay.
I’ve got a friend who teaches German and another buddy who’s half Japanese. I’m hoping I can talk them both into taking my kid for a day and doing a culture deep dive.

Gaming@lemmy.zip•GOG confirm they are working towards GOG Galaxy on LinuxEnglish
92·11 days agoSo for the trans stuff there’s a decent summary and opinion here: https://www.resetera.com/threads/cdpr-is-a-transphobic-company-its-time-we-stop-making-excuses-for-them.307474/
I personally (I know I’m the one who started this chain) didn’t have too much of an opinion on the trans stuff as I’m not in that space at all, so kind of defaulted to that community’s opinion. Not great, company had room to improve.
They’re kind of full of the corporate non-apologies and didn’t handle it the greatest. Everything after was them trying to save face I think. To their credit they did ultimately fire the responsible party. And if it was just that I might have left it thinking they screwed up, hopefully they learn.
But then GoG did their Nazi thing and I’m thinking if I keep smelling smoke there’s a fire ya know?

Linux@lemmy.ml•Official Linux position on LLM usage in kernel development
2·20 days agoAll I’ll say before moving on is legitimately you should maybe go touch grass.
Neural network does not mean LLM. I’m strongly against them for so many reasons. This is the problem with calling it all AI. My stuff was not generative, it was pattern recognition for a safety program for testing so companies could be held accountable.
Just step outside and smell the roses before you have a heart attack.
I chose upgrading my system. Full home theatre. I still get the mumble dialogue effect. It’s just how things are now
You’re talking to a guy who built a full 7.2.4 channel Dolby Atmos system in his basement. Full room within a room acoustic isolation. Basically as good as you can go. Full in room treatment for reflection control. About as flat in room response as you can go.
I say again. Better speakers and system only helps a little. The center channel that audio is mixed to can be raised individually some yes but even then music or other sound effects are panned across and you’ll get your ears blown out.
You can’t magically fix mumble dialogue in system.
Not really, it’s still a problem. Better/more speakers don’t magically fix mumble dialogue mixed way below the action volume.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Official Linux position on LLM usage in kernel development
135·23 days agoSuch a strong science backed rebuttal.
I’m gonna go rethink my entire life now.
Being aware of the numerous massive lawsuits currently being levied against AI companies for their theft, reading research papers on cognitive decline in AI users, and being aware of where the majority of energy in the US comes from, especially for new AI datacenters, really does have a cognitive impact, but it isn’t decline.

113·23 days agoLol. Way to show how little you know. I swear AI bros get the most butt hurt over provable stuff.
I’ve stated my experience elsewhere but I’m a senior software engineer, 20 something years of experience. I have actually created a neural network from the ground up for a previous company.

Just going to ignore Israel using enough bots to literally influence LLM training and suspected to have heavily botted every election.
Yeah… Mamdani is the issue here. Uhuh sure
