Proton is mostly a fork of Wine which has been used for decades to run Windows software on Linux. Valve didn’t do all the hard work by themselves.

Yeah, Proton runs outside of Steam in Heroic and Lutris. That’s basically what the umu project is about. I think it works in Bottles as well.

Almost everything Valve has done for Linux gaming is open source and will remain even if they go away and lock everything down tomorrow.

That’s actually my wife. I’m so proud of her and she’s just seeing what she didn’t accomplish.

Then there’s: I worked my ass of for 8 hours each day for the last week, furthering my wellbeing but only half of the things I did were those I intended to do and there is still so much more I have to get done, I’m such a failure!

In almost every game the gameplay tips and tutorials they give you are not only suboptimal but often outright counterproductive. This is especially bad in multiplayer games.

It was really nice in Doom Eternal, where they added quick swapping to the tips.

In the same vein, when the game starts immediately without giving you a chance to configure it. Because the default configuration is always wrong.

The Steam Deck is great in that regard. Just put it to sleep.

Currently before establishing an encrypted connection to a webserver the domain is sent to the webserver unencrypted so that the server can choose the appropriate certificate to use for encryption. That is called SNI, Server Name Indication.

Of course that’s a privacy risk. There are finally protocols to fix this but they aren’t very widespread and depend on DNS over HTTPS.

I think issuing certificates based on the IP and sending the domain name encrypted based on that certificate could have fixed this issue ages ago.

I never understood why we don’t use IP certificates to encrypt the domain with SNI.
