Your endpoint team isn’t doing a good job.
You assume they have an endpoint team. There are a lot of companies under 100 employees out there. They are often lucky if they have an IT guy at all.
Windows is just another ad platform, now.
All operating systems are now, except vanilla Linux.
I stress vanilla Linux because Android started this Ad-OS shitshow and Android is Linux with extra steps.
You could just call the Free operating systems GNU/Linux or NonGNU/Linux.
“Vanilla linux” is vague terminology and distorts history.
Ok
BoomerStallman.Seriously though, do you really think being a pedantic jackass like Stallman actually ingratiates anyone to FOSS? Because it doesn’t, just so you know. It’s absolutely annoying eye-rolling shit for regular people. But sure, keep gatekeeping Linux as a place where only people with no fucking social skills get to use it or talk about it.
Stallman and attitudes like his absolutely alienate people. Ignore that at your own peril, if you actually want growth in Linux adoption.
What an attitude you have. He made a suggestion, and wasn’t gatekeeping anything.
There exists VanillaOS btw.
Literally nobody likes a pedant who waltzes in only to be pedantic and offer nothing else to the conversation. I don’t know why that’s so shocking to you unless you also have zero fucking social skills.
Funny how both replies to you actually DID offer something to the conversation, providing information for clarification to yourself and others, but your reply to BOTH of them was to be a whiny little bitch making up argumentative points out of the blue to make you feel self-important. Maybe you should just calm down, take the information that was provided, and move on with your day.
Or is this the point where you call me “pedantic” as well, because you sure seem to like using that word to describe everyone but yourself.
pedantic has a literal definition, chucklefuck.
Pedant: a person who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning.
Or am I wrong that the original person I was responding to was not being pedantic about Linux vs. GNU/Linux? It’s like the literal definition of pedantry. Also, I only ever accused the person quibbling about that as pedantic. The other guy I merely had to assume has no social skills, if they don’t understand how annoying pedantry is.
Sorry I know how to use words.
Stallman is right about all his free software takes except his take that commercial free software is acceptable.
(He also has a very bad take about they/them pronouns)
And Epstein, don’t forget his bad takes on connections with Epstein.
Motherfucker is full of bad takes. Tired of people acting like he’s something to look up to, even when I agree with a lot of his good takes. The tech community needs to get fucking self reflection and grow its social skills. People need to follow Linus Torvald’s lead in realizing that he may not be perfect and may need to work on how he communicates.
It’s absolutely annoying eye-rolling shit for regular people.
This is how I feel about reading your posts, dingus.
I guess all the other open source operating systems don’t count anymore?
I don’t think they meant vanilla Linux like vanilla OS, but more as in the vanilla versions of Linux without much on top/proprietary software.
I suppose if you’re running stock MIUI/use stock Google browser then that would be the case.
I just wanna say this is irony that it came up on a work machine tho. Like they really trying to get you out of there 🤣
Microsoft just wants you to have a better job, obviously!
I got this one today on my work laptop - pretty surprising to me Microsoft pulls shenanigans like this without enormous backlash
It’s funny how the astronaut is leaning around it
“Pssst! Wanna buy some xbox controllers?”
whenever people post about issues like these with annoying popups, strangely i never seem to experience them… dgmw i have my gripes with windows im just curious if its maybe a us specific thing or something lmao
you probably turned off the annoying crap, but OP’s workplace evidently did not.
doesn’t excuse microsoft for what they’ve done to windows, but this one is easy to turn off in notifications (or click the gear on the toast to get there).
I live in the US, and I haven’t experienced a lot of these as well. But I also don’t use a Microsoft Account and only use the MS store minimally for things the system requires to function decently. I am pretty sure it hits you with more ads if you’re logged in to your machine with a Microsoft Account instead of a Local Account. It’s part of why they’re pushing so hard for people to stop using local accounts. It’s easier to advertise to someone who can be strictly identified by their user account.
Me neither, the only nagging notifications I get are from Malwarebytes which I should uninstall soon anyways. Am from Germany though so that’s that.
I just got one two weeks ago on my home computer. My first reaction was to figure out how to turn it off. Turns out I already have all windows notifications turned off. This took me from angry to furious. Bullshit like this is exactly what I feared from the changes they made with Windows 10. It took longer than I expected, but they laid the groundwork there and finally followed through.
i just got one the other day asking me to answer some questions for ‘rewards’. i fuckin hate windows sometimes man
Me neither, located in Canada
I usually have notifications off so I don’t get popups, instead any notifs will pile up in there. We were required to turn notifications off during exams for school, and I just left it like that since then.
One big reason might be Windows Home vs Professional licenses. I don’t see 80% of the crap Home license users complain about. The other 20% might be settings (I’ve turned everything off).
Even so Windows is getting plenty annoying nowadays, but it has been this way since Windows Vista. No, Windows 7 wasn’t all sunshine and roses either. And Windows 10 had the same issues (for those Windows 11 deniers).
I’d love to permanently switch to Linux, but it’s not there for me yet. At least in the areas of gaming (especially multiplayer) and part of my work (Software development in .NET, can’t beat a full fledged Visual Studio application so far. Rider has a subscription even for personal use, blegh).
This is on Windows 10 Enterprise
Sheesh. Then maybe it’s a US vs EU topic? A lot of things that fly in the US wouldn’t fly inside the EU without huge fines.
and you have an update ready to install on reboot? holy fucking fuck, that is not even remotely acceptable for an enterprise level operating system.
Someone didn’t dig far enough into the Settings Catalog (can’t say I blame them, there’s a lot there) and turn those off up the ladder. https://www.anoopcnair.com/disable-windows-spotlight-suggested-content-in-settings-using-intune/ This was one of the first policies I pushed out through Intune. Not one Suggested notification on our Windows machines since!
Yeah nah mate. I very concertedly ripped every inch of shitware i could find out of windows, started with tweaker and debloater and scaling up from there. GPO restrictions, the whole kaboodle
Termserving into a workbox the other day I absently mutter to myself ‘Oh you’re running slow, is that why you’re reporting offline baby?’ and fucking w10 popped up a ‘slow machine? Try this!’ notification. I just about set the fucking thing on fire.
This shit is insidious.
This is why I continue to not have used windows in over 20 years. It just keeps getting worse and worse and worse.
Paying for the product isn’t enough for them, you are still the product.
You’re telling me you don’t want to - checks notes - harness the power of networking?
Have never had a popup ad like this. Maybe because I have all of that stuff turned off?
Seems like an oddly specific reason to run Linux on your personal machines tho.
There are tons of other issues that are far more relevant and affect more users than simple windows store popup ads that most people don’t seem to get.
Facebook for a different type of asshole.
I guess this is the same binary as the one you saw: BGAUpsell.exe pushes Bing
The sad thing is how many Windows¹ users seem to think they deserve this sort of punishment; that this is what a normal relationship with your tools is like.
It’s abuse. And yes, you really can leave.
¹ And, to a lesser extent, Mac — and, sadly, Ubuntu these days too.
I recently got a pop up like this, trying to push the Bing search bar widget onto my desktop. like GTFO!!!
Tell me your IT department sucks without telling me your IT department sucks.
There’s a GPO for that.
Oh even better is connecting to a printer and that printer downloading and installing a Windows Store app. That cancerous HP Print app is the one that always comes to mind I see on family members’ computers.
